What Is RSS?

A quick guide to RSS feeds: what they are, how they work, and how to use them to stay up to date on everything happening here.

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's a standard way for websites to publish a running list of their updates (new articles, announcements, standings, deals) so that you can follow along without having to remember to check back.

Think of it like a magazine subscription. Once you subscribe, the new issues show up automatically. With RSS, new posts and updates show up in your RSS reader app the moment they're published.

No algorithm, no ads, no noise. Unlike social media, RSS shows you everything from the sources you chose, in order, with nothing filtered out or bumped down by an algorithm.

How does it work?

Every RSS feed is just a web address (a URL) that points to a file that lists recent updates from a website. Your RSS reader checks that address periodically and shows you anything new. You never have to visit the site manually to see what's new.

You can follow as many feeds as you want, all in the same app, all in one place. Most people follow dozens of sites: local news, weather, sports scores, blogs, and now things like league standings from their bowling alley.

How to subscribe to a feed

Once you have an RSS reader, subscribing to a feed takes about 30 seconds. Here's the basic process (steps vary slightly by app, but the idea is the same):

  1. Go to our Feeds page and find the feed you want, like News & Events or League Standings.

  2. Click the RSS button to open the feed URL, then copy the address from your browser's address bar. Or simply right-click the RSS button and choose Copy Link.

  3. Open your RSS reader app and look for a button like Add Feed, Subscribe, or a + icon.

  4. Paste the feed URL and confirm. New updates will start appearing in your reader automatically.

Tip: Most RSS reader apps also let you search for a website by name or address. Try entering grovecitybowlodrome.com and the app will often find our feeds automatically.

Subscribing to all our feeds at once with OPML

If you want to follow all of our feeds in one shot, you can use our OPML file. OPML is a simple format for sharing a collection of feeds, like a bundle. Instead of adding each feed one by one, you import the OPML file and your reader subscribes to everything automatically.

  1. Download our OPML file (it's a small file; your browser will save it to your Downloads folder).

  2. In your RSS reader, look for an Import option. In Feedly it's under Organize → Import OPML. In NetNewsWire it's under File → Import Subscriptions.

  3. Select the downloaded file. Your reader will add all our feeds instantly.
